Welcome to the Health Diplomacy Institutional Network

The Health Diplomacy Institutional Network is a collaborative platform that facilitates academic and professional exchange and promotes innovative solutions to complex global health challenges.

Our Mission and Areas of Work

The Health Diplomacy Institutional Network (HD Network) has a dual mission: to strengthen the academic and practical framework for global health diplomacy, and to serve as a global platform for collaborative innovation. The HD Network contributes to the work of leading academic institutions engaged in health diplomacy by fostering the exchange of knowledge, research, and best practices to strengthen the field.

Academic Collaboration: Encouraging the sharing of academic resources, research findings, and teaching methodologies among member institutions. This may include the development of joint courses, workshops, and seminars that address current and emerging challenges in global health diplomacy.

Research and Innovation: Stimulating collaborative research that contributes to the advancement of health diplomacy. The HD Network supports interdisciplinary studies that combine insights from public health, international relations, and policy analysis.

Professional Development: Providing platforms for faculty and student exchanges, internships, and mentorship opportunities. These initiatives aim to cultivate the next generation of health diplomats equipped with the skills and insights to shape global health policy.

Policy Influence and Advocacy: Leveraging the HD Network’s collective expertise to inform and influence health policy at regional and global levels. The HD Network strives to be an active contributor to policy dialogues and global health forums.

Global Outreach and Engagement: Building collaborations with governments, international agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other relevant stakeholders. This engagement helps extend the HD Network’s reach and amplify its collective impact on global health outcomes.

Health Diplomacy

Health diplomacy is the art and science by which governments, the private sector, civil society, and individuals navigate political processes to improve health outcomes. It operates in both domestic and international contexts, encompassing bilateral and multilateral agreements, the use of health as a foreign policy tool, and the finding of solutions to cross-border health challenges.

A key subset of health diplomacy is Global Health Diplomacy, which operates at the intersection of health and international relations on the global stage. It encompasses global health governance, the coordination of efforts, and the negotiation of priorities among international organizations, states, and non-state actors. While its primary focus is global, it also intersects with domestic policies on complex issues such as climate change, crisis preparedness and response, and health financing.

Health Diplomats

Health diplomacy involves a wide range of professionals, reflecting the reality that health outcomes cannot be achieved by the health sector alone. Health diplomats include individuals working in Ministries of Foreign Affairs, government agencies, public institutions, the private sector (both corporate and not-for-profit), and humanitarian organizations. These professionals use the tools of health diplomacy to advocate for and advance health objectives across sectors.
