The Health Diplomacy Institutional Network brings together academic institutions representing a rich diversity of regions and perspectives. With members across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania, the Network fosters collaboration among leading universities and research centers.

Africa

Burkina Faso

The African Institute of Public Health (IASP) is a non-profit organization. It was established in 2012 in Ouagadougou by a group of academic researchers and professionals working in the field of public health. These African educators and researchers recognized the need to work collaboratively to provide high-level training for health professionals. As a result, they committed to dedicating all their resources to the IASP, an initiative aimed at benefiting health professionals and, by extension, African populations.

The primary objectives of the IASP are:

  • Conducting research on major health issues affecting populations;
  • Training researchers and leaders capable of contributing analytical and research expertise to healthcare networks and improving health systems.

The Population, Family and Reproductive Health (PFRH) department was established as a derivative of the University of Ghana, Johns Hopkins, Bill and Melinda Gates Institute collaboration initiative in 2002. As one of the key departments of the school, our services to students cut across the various areas in maternal and child health, reproductive health, nutrition, population, adolescent and family.  Our programmes have an established, long history of providing public health professionals of "choice" to the districts, regions, and national health care workforce. 

Our mission is to train public health practitioners who will be leaders and change agents for health development in Ghana in particular and in the wider African context.

The Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) is a non-profit, which aims to promote transformative and structuring actions in the field of global health and human development. We work to improve global health, promote gender equality, expand knowledge production and stimulate development in Guinea Bissau and beyond.

IGHD connects, collaborates and co-creates to foster science and data-driven policies, and intelligence gathering to galvanize public debate and influence health, social and economic development-oriented solutions. By working with a diverse range of partners, including local communities, governments, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders, IGHD leverages unique strengths and expertise to achieve sustainable development outcomes.

We aim to catalyse transformational change through quality research, analysis, advocacy and policy recommendations, to achieve equitable access to quality health care, gender equality and economic opportunities for all.

Rwanda

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is one of the four Schools under the Makerere University College of Health Sciences, a constituent College of Makerere University. Established, in 1922, Makerere University is one of the oldest Universities in Africa and is currently ranked the 2nd best in research in Africa. It was the first university in East Africa to offer degrees in public health and it remains the leading School of Public Health in the region.

MakSPH conducts research and provides consultation services to the Government of Uganda and various national and international health organizations as well as bilateral and multilateral agencies involved in health.

 The Centre for Global Health, Dalla Lana School of Public Health’s Executive Course in Global Health Diplomacy is back for a fourth year. In collaboration with the Office of International Affairs for the Health Portfolio, Government of Canada, this executive training course is the first-of-its-kind in Canada. Designed for professionals working in health or health-related sectors, this course will explore the theory and practice of global health diplomacy as it relates to COVID-19 and other current health issues, while offering a uniquely Canadian approach.

Georgetown University, Health Diplomacy Training Institute | Center for Global Health Science and Security Read more on the GHSS website
The Georgetown University Center for Global Health Science and Security (GHSS) works to mitigate the threats posed by outbreaks and other public health emergencies by enriching the evidence base for informed decision-making and promoting sustainable capacities to prevent, detect and respond. Since its establishment in 2016, it offers 11 courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Center expects to launch a new certificate for Global Health Diplomacy which will be made available to currently enrolled students at the university. Additionally, during the summer the Health Diplomacy Institute will offer courses in programming, data visualisation, bio-economy, business of pandemics, data for policy, climate, and health.

The university’s evolving work on health diplomacy is anchored in two key institutions:
• The National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH), which leads interdisciplinary research and teaching to improve population health and wellbeing in Australia, the region, and globally.
• The Department of International Relations within the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, which offers expertise in strategic diplomacy, global governance, and the geopolitical dimensions of health and foreign policy.

As a school, RSIS fosters a nurturing environment to develop students into first-class scholars and practitioners. As a think tank, RSIS conducts policy-relevant and forward-looking research in both national and international security, science and technology, society and economic and environmental sustainability. 

RSIS also produces academic research on security and international affairs. It publishes scholarly research in top-tier academic journals and leading university presses, and distributes policy research in a timely manner to a wide range of readers. Relevant RSIS research contributes to rule-making and norm-setting in cyber domain and digitalisation. RSIS works closely with other academic institutions and partners including international and regional organisations, global think tanks as well as national agencies to conduct policy relevant research in various areas of interest.

The International Health Policy Program, Thailand (IHPP) is a semi-autonomous program conducting research on national health priorities related to health policy and systems in Thailand. As part of the Global Health Division of the Ministry of Public Health, this program aims at improving national health care systems through generating reliable knowledge and evidence of health policy and systems for the public and Thai policymakers.IHPP focuses not only on research but also on policy processes and the utility of research findings, which requires researchers to work closely with relevant stakeholders in each particular field. Most importantly, IHPP has physical proximity to, but an arm’s length relationship with policymakers in and outside the Ministry of Public Health in order to maintain policy relevance, scientific integrity and independence.

The University of Split, Croatia offers a joint postgraduate specialist study by the Faculty of Economics and the School of Medicine focused on Management of Healthcare Organizations. This program aims to train current and future healthcare managers in effective administration within complex business environments, covering key managerial processes such as planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling healthcare operations. 

The course on Health Diplomacy included in this study equips students with practical diplomatic skills necessary for international health forums, conferences, and negotiations. Learning outcomes include the ability to apply modern diplomatic techniques in multilateral health environments, define diplomatic roles and functions in global health systems, assess health priorities and policies, recommend strategies for international cooperation and partnership building, manage health crises diplomatically, and evaluate negotiation outcomes. This prepares graduates to effectively navigate and influence global health diplomacy and multilateral health governance.

Through its research, education and convening activities, the GHC broadens the understanding of global health issues, contributes to setting agendas and fosters inclusive partnerships. Over the years, the GHC has built partnerships with a wide-range of institutions and has acted as a neutral platform for policy dialogues and conferences

Ukraine

With over 180 years of history (established in 1841), it plays a leading role in advancing public health, medical science, and clinical excellence in Ukraine and worldwide. NMU offers teaching programs in more than 70 specialities, including General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, postgraduate, doctoral, and continuous professional development programs. With over 10,000 students from Ukraine and over 50 countries, NMU maintains long-standing partnerships with elite universities and research institutions, including Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Germany), Vilnius University (Lithuania), Sapienza University of Rome (Italy). These collaborations involve joint teaching, international research, exchange programs, and curriculum development.

In 2025 NMU became a partner in “Health Bridge”, a new project funded by the Swedish Institute, conducted in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and the University of Latvia. The project focuses on building an Eastern European Health Diplomacy Network to strengthen regional cooperation, resilience, and evidence-informed policy in public health and international relations.

The Wolfson College is the largest postgraduate college in Oxford, with a long history of hosting interdisciplinary and international fellows and scholars. The Humanitarian Leadership Diploma (HLD) is developed by the Global Health Institute (GHI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in collaboration with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy (HLA). It aims to build the capacity of the humanitarian workforce equipping them with the leadership skills to become agents of change.

It is designed for managers, and officers working in the humanitarian sector as well as those considering a career change by empowering them with the knowledge and skills essential for a better understanding of the realm of humanitarian leadership.

HLD will advance the leadership skills of learners and increase the readiness of organizations, to effectively tackle humanitarian projects.
